Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming
Mute; 2011Three reactions are generally prompted upon the mention of M83—“Mehh..” “alshkjsbngsnvkbjv!!!!!!!!!!!” or “BLARRGGHHH!!!!:@:@:@@@!”. Most of his records (with the exception of his widely regarded debut) generally tend to stir the pot in terms of where fans place their allegiance. Even to this day, about this very album I have heard everything from the ‘glowing gift from heaven’-type praises to other downright scathing reviews. And it really isn’t fair, because if we look at this project objectively, whether you find yourself pleased with the outcome or not, no one can deny that Anthony Gonzalez is making some of the biggest music out there.
He’s the warm fuzzy anthemic head of the electronic world. And on this new release, he lets it all loose. Chant-a-long oh oh oh’s, bubbly nostalgia, sweeping choruses, and voice-over pieces slathered in melodrama. It’s so jampacked with all this cheese that I’m sure this generation will be remembered for, but rather than coming off as if Gonzalez were making some kind of Indie-Rock-Electronic checklist, it’s altogether much more sincere than that. As the cover art might suggest; this album is very much an ode to a lost childhood. As romanticized as it all is, there’s an indescribable yearning to each melody and texture that rings true to the sting of human nostalgia. Everything in this record feels pertaining to a very specific time and place. Every corner enchants and inspires some sense of magic in the listener.

This being Gonzalez’ first double album, he doesn’t stray too far from the tried and true formula, but that’s not to say he doesn’t make it his own. The melodies are all executed with precision, the aesthetic is focused but not restrictive, and the structures are dynamic as ever. The disc’s mirror each other quite well; each has an Intro and Outro track, 3 interludes, 1 dynamic ballad and the rest is filled with alluring dancefloor glamour and glitz. Each disc clocks in at around 36 minutes, making for an overall running time of 1hr 13mins. Although I must admit I was expecting a slightly longer running time (a solid 90 minutes would have been nice maybe?), however 73 minutes is in no way a cop out.
I can see (and have seen) a lot of people on the fence about this one, perhaps put off by all the cheese, but there is an earnestness so deeply embedded in M83’s latest offering that I honestly don’t ever remember hearing. This record goes places that his previous releases only hinted at, and you really do get enraptured in actually being there. This isn’t an album to simply listen to, or even experience, but rather to marvel at.
